Shelterwood Books and Teacher Resources is dedicated to providing teacher resources that connect science and literature for grades 3-8. Shelterwood Books was originally founded by Lynda Delo. Lynda has experience in teaching science in middle school and high school, homeschooling and as a librarian. She lives in Shreveport, LA and is married with four sons.

Hi! Welcome to Shelterwood Books and Teacher Resources

I’m a big proponent of using literature to teach subject content. When we were homeschooling we followed Charlotte Mason's ideas using "real" books to teach subject content, we were able to do just that. During the years that followed our homeschooling experience, I taught science in a public school. I was constantly looking for ways to incorporate the use of quality fiction and nonfiction in my classes. In 2008 I had an article published in The Science Teacher, the high school journal published by the National Science Teachers Association on this very topic. The problem I had though, was that in most children’s books the science theme was usually just background material in the story, I wanted books that had science concepts central to the plot but still read as a good, entertaining children’s story. Since these were hard to find, I started writing my own. The science content in each story I've written is related to one of the National Science Standards. Since I’ve taught environmental science for the last six years, most are related to the environmental science standards. These books will eventually be made available through this site.

Shelterwood Books is looking for authors of children's books that relate to science, nature and/or animals. We use a print-on-demand service and the author does all of his/her own book promotion. Shelterwood Books was named for the large trees in a forest that provide shelter to young saplings just getting started. As such, we are an umbrella company in that we provide an avenue for authors interested in self-publishing to get their books noticed. Book proposals must meet Shelterwood's criteria in order to be included on our site. If you are interested, e-mail us through our "Contact Us" page on this site. The only expense to you is to purchase an ISBN number through us for $35 and then $4 a month per book that you want to sell on our website. Your book will have a whole page to itself and can include information about you, the author. Let this be your platform or web presence that is so crucial to selling books online. All profits from your book go directly to you.
