Dolch Word List
The Dolch word list is a set of lists of the 220 most commonly used words in the English language. In 1936 Edward William Dolch, PhD identified the 220 most commonly used words that were not nouns in children's books of that time. He devised a separate list for nouns. Many of the words on the Dolch word list do not sound out phonetically and have since become known as "sight" words, because they are memorized and "read" by sight (recognized by their shape and not from sounding out). Some of the words are no longer used regularly in English today but most have remained high frequency words for almost eighty years.
